Sunshine Hill Farm Garlic Fest & Craft Show History

Sunshine Hill Farm was settled in the late 1800's by the Swiss Scheuber Family amidst picturesque mountain and valley views. The Scheuber Family operated a wonderful farm that was self-sufficient in many aspects. From clearing the land, making the lumber, and building the barns to raising cows, pigs, chickens, horses and making cheese and candies, the Scheuber Family was very productive. We thank them for what they created over the many years of family-farm work.

The Hamilton's are now living and working the farm with most activities pointed towards the Garlic Fest every August. Since 1997, the Fest has grown from a small idea of friends, crafts and garlic to a community event hosting over 12,000 attendees. With all the activities centered in and around a charming 5,000 square foot barn, step back in history as you view the old farmhouse, barns, and windmill. The Fest incorporates a pleasing country atmosphere of continuous live music on an outdoor stage, 35 local crafters, 12 food vendors, kids make-it and take-it crafts, farm animals, and a meeting place for friends and family. Family and friends have been key to the success of the Garlic Fest.

The Sand family, Ashley Creek Farm, has co-organized the Fest since the original idea. Friendship dating back to the 70's as 4-H partners, created the initial fire for this event. Sand's gourmet garlic is in great demand and he needed an event to showcase his products. Sand's farm display at the Fest has grown 8 to 10 times since the beginning. The Garlic Fest has not been possible without the efforts of the Sand Family and their quality products.

Since the beginning, the Garlic Fest has donated a portion of the proceeds to a local charity. In 1997, the charity of choice was the local chapter of the American Red Cross to help replace their recently burned building. The Pope's Kids Place Respite Center of Lewis County has been a big part of the Garlic Fest from 1998 through 2003. Now the Garlic Fest selects local charitable organizations to receive part of the admission. Some of the past groups to benefit are Lewis County 4-H Scholarships, Chehalis Little League, Alexander Park Renovation Project, Children's Hospital, W.F. West Wrestling, Salvation Army, Lewis County Sheriff's Volunteers, and more.
